DISOBEDIENCE

New York photographer Ronit Krushka flies to London after learning about the death of her estranged father, the Rav of an Orthodox Jewish community. It is the same community that shunned Ronit decades earlier for her childhood attraction to Esti, a female friend. Their fortuitous and happy reunion soon reignites their burning passion as the two women explore boundaries of faith and sexuality.

Disobedience is a drama of love and the fight for acceptance against the confines of a regimented order that speaks to audiences across many backgrounds. Ronit is a modern, free spirited woman who has run away from her origins. Esti has stayed in the community but has run away from her true self. And there is the other important element of Dovid, the Rav’s spiritual son and natural successor. The days of mourning allow all their repressed feelings to come out and a new order is established.

Sebastian Lelio's sensitive direction and the combined acting prowess of Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams and Alessandro Nivola bring an urgent energy and a sense of deep familiarity to the film.
